Durapure Coatings Marine Seal
General Description
A zero VOC, non-toxic, non-carcinogenic, odour neutral, impervious, light weight sealing system for lining the bilge or hold of a wooden, concrete, aluminium, steel or fibreglass hull. It comes in a three-part kit consisting of a penetrating base, reinforcing fabric and topcoat. It is a long lasting, impervious coating designed to protect the integrity of the hull structure; It is easy to use and cleans up with water. Be careful to clean up as you go because it is a high performance coating that will be hard to clean up if left to cure. Be sure to protect highly finished surfaces or anything else that may be marred if you were to spill the Marine Seal. Light in weight and light in colour Durapure Marine Seal will not support combustion.
Typical uses
Durapure Marine Seal is formulated to protect wooden, concrete, aluminium, steel and fibreglass hulls from rot, corrosion or osmosis due to the humid, damp or wet, often poorly ventilated conditions usually found in the bilge of all types of water craft such as- dories, dinghies, wooden boats, sail boats, row boats, fishing boats, luxury yachts, motor yachts, ferries, cargo ships, container ships, super tankers, cruise liners, naval ships and canoes.
Durapure Marine Seal is suitable for lining holds, iceboxes, freezers etc. that may come directly in contact with food.
How to use
While there are no explosive solvents, VOCs, or carcinogens in Durapure Marine Seal and it is odour neutral, good ventilation is required for safety and to allow for curing. Do not try to apply Durapure Marine Seal if there is free water in the bilge. It may be applied to a damp surface but this will lengthen the curing time. Make sure surfaces are free of oil or grease.
Remove all loose material, chip away loose rust, use a stiff brush or sandpaper if necessary to achieve a clean surface free of debris.
Fill any low areas with Mucky Puck (sold separately). Mucky Puck is a filler that has the same environmental qualities as and is designed to work with Marine Seal. It is used to fill low areas (knots in plywood as an example), fair joints or to fillet corners prior to covering with Marine seal.
Durapure Marine Seal is a durable, impervious protective coating. IT IS NOT INTENDED TO BE A STRUCTURAL PART OF THE VESSEL Make sure that the material being coated is sound. If there is rot or excessive corrosion present repairs must be made before the coating is applied.
DURAPURE MARINE SEAL IS A HIGH PERFORMANCE COATING, IT WILL STICK, CLEAN UP WITH WATER IMMEDIATELY.
DURAPURE MARINE SEAL IS A SYSTEM. THESE COMPONENTS ARE DESIGNED TO BE USED TOGETHER. IMPROPER USE MAY RESULT IN FAILURE.
First pay attention to all the fine details like limber holes. Do not block the limber holes, they are there to allow water to flow to the bilge pump. However we do want to make sure they are not a cause of rot or corrosion. If the limber holes are not already adequately protected start here. Inspect the hole for rot or corrosion and repair as necessary. Cut enough narrow strips of the reinforcing fabric to go around the hole and long enough to go through the limber hole with about 100mm. (4" to spare). Make sure there is enough for 100% coverage. Liberally coat the inside of the hole and the surface where the excess material will extend beyond both sides of the hole (hull, bulkhead or stringer) with the PENETRATING BASE. Immediately push the fabric through the hole and using more penetrating base, saturate the fabric making sure it adheres to the inside of the hole and the surfaces around the hole. We will cover the narrow ribbons of fabric when we cover the flat surface. CHECK THAT THE LIMBER HOLES ARE NOT BLOCKED.

Look for other details that should be addressed before we move on to the bigger surfaces. Always allow for an overlap with the larger piece of fabric to follow. The details do not have to be done first it just makes for a tidier finished job.
Through hull fittings, the shaft log, exhaust etc. are treated the same way as the limber holes except that the ribbons are on the outside of the fitting rather than in the hole, flair out onto the hull. It is often possible to wrap another ribbon around the fitting for an improved seal. Allow more time for multiple layers of Marine Seal to dry. It doesn't have to be fully cured but it needs to be stable enough for you to work with. ALWAYS CHECK YOUR WORK BEFORE MOVING ON.
Lets assume that all the details are taken care of. Now the job should be less fiddly. Ensure that you are comfortable and have made sure that you have good ventilation. Being comfortable in a bilge might be a lot to hope for but make sure the ventilation is good. Gasoline and other gasses will accumulate in the bilge. They may explode or make you ill. ENSURE THAT YOU HAVE GOOD, SAFE VENTILATION.
Next, cut the fabric that will cover the stringers, frames etc. Cut the larger pieces first so that scraps can be used for the smaller pieces. Always allow for an overlap of at least 25 mm (1") with the mating fabric.

Apply the penetrating base to the area to be covered and place the reinforcing fabric and use a roller or brush to draw the penetrating base through the reinforcing fabric (add more penetrating base if necessary but don't overdo it).
Make sure that there is an overlap with the details finished earlier. Double check to make sure that nothing was missed.

This is a water-based system and good ventilation is needed for it to cure. Curing time will vary with temperature and humidity.
When cured enough to work on (could be as little as overnight) check again. If you should find an unprotected area, add another layer. In the unlikely event that the Marine Seal has not adhered it should be a simple matter to cut the Marine Seal out, level with Mucky Puck and re cover with Marine Seal penetrating base and reinforcing fabric. Then coat the whole surface with topcoat. The topcoat will also need some time to cure. When it is finished you will have a durable almost totally impervious membrane protecting the bilge. The colour is ivory. (other colours are available).
Some extreme applications where there is a lot of wear two or even three plies may be desirable.
Installing Marine Seal Overhead
Marine Seal is very light so vertical surfaces should not present a problem. When installing Maine Seal overhead don't saturate the fabric with the penetrating base. Apply sufficient penetrating base to the overhead surface to allow the reinforcing fabric to adhere and allow that to dry. Then go over the fabric with a light coat of penetrating base before applying the topcoat.
Finishing
Usually there will be no need for additional finishing but if yours is a finely finished yacht or you want to have the protection of the Marine Seal above the cabin sole and need a higher level finish, it may be lightly sanded and painted. Remember that you will be working in a confined space and your family may be playing or even sleeping in that same space. Use our Ecological Paints. (Contact us for a quote) These products are not just VOC free they contain not toxins or carcinogens and are odour neutral. Take care of yourself and your family. Most toxic finishes will be compatible with Marine Seal but try it in a dark corner to make sure.
Ordering and shipping
Worldwide shipments are made from Vancouver, BC, Canada.
European shipments are made from Hereford, United Kingdom.
US shipments are made from Phoenix, Arizona.
Let us know how much you require and we will send you a quote for the nearest kit size. Allow at least 10% for overlaps, fitting etc. when calculating the area to be covered.
Purchaser will be responsible for all other costs such as but not limited to, brokerage, duty, taxes etc. when required.
Marine Seal is also used in similar applications where low permeability is an asset. The sump of a cooling tower for an air conditioner for instance. In this case chemicals in the water are likely to damage the concrete. Lining the sump with Marine Seal will protect the concrete.
